The Snapper essays The Snapper. In Barrytown, Dublin, where the Rabbitte family lives, they call a little baby a snapper. This book is mostly about Sharon whos pregnant, so that is why the book is called the snapper. It is a novel of manners. The book is about a working class family in Barrytown, a suburb of the Irish capital. It is one of those working class suburbs with tiny houses, a lot of children in the streets, unemployment and heavy drinking. It is also a great sense of togetherness, both within the family and in the local community. It is also a social novel. It talks about alcohol abuse and rape, the adultery of Mr. Burgess, Sharons pregnancy and the problems it causes, not only for the Rabbitte family, but also for the Barrytown community. Sharon Rabbitte: Sharon is the main character of this book. She is 20 years old, and the eldest daughter of Jimmy (Sr.) and Veronica Rabbitte. It is a very hard time for her, being pregnant of her neighbour who is married, but she wont admit that it is. She is a very good girl, always supporting other people, but she needs a lot of support too. Although she lied about the babys father, she names the baby after the real dad. Sharon is a round character, during the story we get a lot of information about her. Jimmy Sr.: He is Sharons father. He works, and every evening he goes to his favourite pub, where he meets his friends. First he supports Sharon, but when everybody in town knows that Mister Burgess, their neighbour, is the one who made Sharon pregnant, he takes a bit distant of Sharon.
